Stick Your Neck out for the Common Good

In the bustling urban spaces of New York City, amidst the towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, I discovered a beautiful work of arts in craft, a bust- a silent sentinel of inspiration – the giraffe. While not native to these concrete canyons, like the Giraffe the concrete canyons symbolic presence looms large and it cast a long and graceful shadow over our collective consciousness, embodying a sense of majesty and resilience. In the giraffe's towering form, we find inspiration to stand tall, to embrace risk, and to extend ourselves for the betterment of society.

In the shadows of risk-taking and struggles, there is a beautiful wife.

Every so often, as I navigate the labyrinth of city life, the image of a giraffe draws me in wherever I encounter this majestic creature. Whether in the verdant oasis of a park or as an artful sculpture adorning the interior of a magnificent building, its towering stature and distinctive silhouette serve as a poignant reminder of courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

For me, the sight of a giraffe sparks more than passing curiosity or aesthetic appreciation; it ignites a profound call to action. It urges me to stretch beyond my comfort zone, to transcend self-interest, and to embrace the inherent risks of championing the common good.

In their towering presence, we find inspiration to stand tall, to take risks, and to extend ourselves for the betterment of society.

Its graceful silhouette, evocative of courage and altruism, resonates deeply within me, a testament to the transformative journey I've shared with John Graham, a former US Diplomat, and his wife Ann, the founders of Giraffe Heroes International.

Our acquaintance began eighteen years ago at the World Ethics Forum in Oxford University, where John's visionary leadership transcended borders and inspired action. Over the years, his commitment to fostering civic activism has only intensified, leaving an indelible mark on communities worldwide.

12 years ago, our paths converged once more as we collaborated to establish a Giraffe Heroes International affiliate in Sierra Leone. John's visit to Sierra Leone was marked by activities that stirred the GHI SL into motion. During John’s journey through Sierra Leone, a whirlwind of impactful initiatives galvanized the very essence of GHI SL into vibrant action. Our endeavors ranged from captivating dialogues with eager students at the Mary Kingsley Auditorium of Fourah Bay College to dynamic radio talk shows with DJ Base and sundry others, resonating the noble missions of GIH far and wide. We held enriching workshops, delving deep into community empowerment, and embarked on enlightening excursions to the heart of provincial towns and villages, unveiling the transformative endeavors of my esteemed organization, the B-Gifted Foundation of Sierra Leone..

In the years that followed, GHI grew into a household name, thanks in part to young colleagues and local heroes like Sei and Sulaiman. Together, we embarked on a journey to motivate and train civic activists, empowering communities to confront challenges head-on and champion the common good.

Today, as I seek purpose both in the US and Sierra Leone, I am reminded of the need to continue to stick my neck out. Today, as I find a sense of purpose in the US 🇺🇸 so that I can give back in even more impactful ways in Sierra Leone, I am reminded of the need to continue to stick my neck out.

Amidst the paradox of urban splendor and chaos in New York, the sight of a giraffe serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles in my homeland and the transformative power of GHI to uplift local heroes in their courageous journeys. Like the giraffe, we are called to stand tall, to take risks, and to extend ourselves for the betterment of society.

In the shadows of these giants, we find inspiration not only to admire their grace but also to emulate their strength. As I navigate the maze of city life, I am reminded that true progress demands active participation and a willingness to confront the status quo.

So, I traverse the streets of this vibrant metropolis with renewed purpose, fueled by the vision of Giraffe Heroes International and the enduring legacy of Ann Medlock and John Graham. Together, we stand tall, ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow and leave a lasting impact on the world we share
